The Beauty (and Challenge) of Synchronized Choreography

The challenge of being in sync with your fellow dancers comes down to listening to the music, and/or knowing your counts. There is nothing more lame than nailing the choreography, but being a count or two ahead or behind. It makes that performance look amatuer, and I am certain that is not what you or your choreographer are going for. Practice makes perfect, or as one of my favorite modern dance teacher likes to say is "Practice makes permanent." I think that also has a good ring to it. So if you are rehearsing for a performance, then definitely do go home and listen to the music, and count at the same time.. do this while visualizing the choreography until you absolutely know it.. then begin to mark the steps, progressively making your movement more and more full out! No one ever said dancing and having a solid grasp on musicality come easy.. for some yes, and for others, it might take a little more effort and time. This is okay, because it is something that one can get better at. Also the more you can synchronize your breath with the choreography too, the better you may feel about the timing. Not sure if that makes sense for some of you, but I am telling you it works. Breathing is a life saver- no pun intended- when it comes to clean dancing. When a dancer is relaxed and breathing, there is sense of ease to his/her dancing, and this should be a goal for the entire group.
